Super Saturday Series, April 30, 2022, Georgia Gwinnett College

Students from >15 middle schools participated in the event. We organized two workshops. Following activities from the “celebrating chemistry” were performed at the event.
Activity 1- Dye from bugs. Check here for the details.
Activity 2-Activity: Taking the Sting Out of Bites. Check here for the details.

Chemists Celebrate Earth Week/Peachtree Ridge HS , April 29, 2022.

The outreach activities were designed based on the CCEW theme “The Buzz About Bugs – Insect Chemistry”. We had a brief power-point presentation, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. All activities innovatively tied together the theme of insect chemistry using creative and original experiments. These Experiments were conducted following the ACS safety guidelines. The following activities were performed:
Activity 1
Candle chemistry: Comparison of structural and physical properties of beeswax with paraffin wax.
Activity 2
Why insects can walk on water? We discussed the research on water striders and conducted hands-on activities using floating coins and density.
Activity 3
Color of insects. We examined the different colors, including the structural colors. Hands-on activities were performed using liquid crystalline films and polarizing polymers that show various colors.
Activity 4
Luminescent insects. We talked about luminescent insects. They glow because of bioluminescence. We compared and contrasted bioluminescent insects with chemiluminescence. Then we also created luminescent color using chemical reaction.
Finally, we distributed Celebrating Chemistry Journal and CCEW goodies to attendees.

Atlanta Science Festival, March 26, 2022.

29,000 attendees participated in  the 9th annual Atlanta Science Festival, March 12-26. With 114 events at 63 venues across metro Atlanta, produced in partnership with 118 event hosts, exhibitors, and sponsors, and with more than 700 volunteers, the Festival is building community around science and broadening access to learning. The theme of the American Chemical Society Georgia Section outreach was “Chemistry in Your Pocket”. We chose the theme to emphasize the power of chemistry in improving and transforming people’s lives (American Chemical Society Vision). We distributed pocket periodic tables and conducted multiple demonstrations. The experiments were designed based on the interest, relevance, and self-efficacy (IRS) framework. We demonstrated the electrolysis of water and explained the principle of fuel cells. The “hydrogen fuel cell car” demonstration was one of the most popular with the attendees. We also distributed the American Chemical Society “Celebrating Chemistry” Magazine

Gwinnett Science Fair Judge, February 25, 2022

Judged middle school and HS presentation at the 44th annual Gwinnett Regional Science Engineering + Innovation Fair on Friday, February 25, 2022. Helped to judge the middle school and high school presentation. At the science fair 974 students presented 487 presentations.

Super Saturday Series, November 10, 2019, Georgia Gwinnett College

Super Saturday Series is an all-day Saturday hands-on science and technology workshop, demonstration and hands on activities targeted at middle-school and high-school girls. The focus on girls is to address the gender gap that is currently present within our science and technology field. Science and gender equality are both vital for sustainable development.

As a committee member and point of contact for School of Science and Technology, I encouraged all SST disciplines show case one activity at the event. I also lead Chemistry discipline and organized various activities (writing using electricity and light, converting chick-fil-A waste greese to biodiesel). As this year is international year of periodic tables periodic table. IT discipline organized programmable robots and physics discipline show cased  R-BEAR rove demonstration and frequency generators.
