Mallia is an experienced educator currently working as an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Georgia. With over 20 years of dedicated service in higher education, Mallia consistently demonstrates exemplary leadership and a strong commitment to fostering academic excellence.
Mallia’s contributions extend beyond the classroom and the institution, as evidenced by his successful establishment of multiple award-winning programs, symposia, and outreach activities that have made a great impact on both the institution and the broader community for the effectiveness in advancing higher education.
Mallia’s research work focuses on the design and synthesis of organic functional soft materials, with wide-ranging applications in pharmaceutically active molecules, self-healing materials, green solvents, ionic liquids, molecular gels, and liquid crystals. Mallia’s research work has been appeared as cover feature in many flagship journals, including the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Chemical Society Reviews and Langmuir. He has published 46 peer-reviewed publications and presented his research work at various national and international conferences.
Mallia has held active leadership positions within the American Chemical Society at the national, divisional, regional, and local levels, playing a key role in shaping the direction of the society and advocating for the interests of chemists. In recognition of his significant contributions, Mallia has been honored with membership in the prestigious Fellows of the American Chemical Society. This distinction serves as a testament to his exceptional efforts in providing scientific research opportunities for undergraduate and high school students from underrepresented and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as his commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and leadership within the American Chemical Society.
Throughout his career, Mallia has received numerous awards and honors, including the Georgia Gwinnett College Outstanding Faculty Service Award (2022), the American Chemical Society National Outreach Volunteer of the Year Award (2020), the Georgia Gwinnett College Top Claw Award (2019), the Georgia Gwinnett College Scholarship and Creativity Award (2019), the E. Ann Nalley Award for volunteer service to the American Chemical Society (2014), the Inoue Foundation of Science Award in Japan (2004), the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Fellowship in Japan (2002), and the Council for Science and Industrial Research Fellowship in India.
