The GGC Chemistry Grants and Awards Committee recognized outstanding undergraduate students for their achievements and excellence demonstrated in five main areas of Chemistry (Organic, Inorganic, Physical, Analytical, and Biochemistry). Georgia Gwinnett College’s (GGC) second virtual CREATE Symposium took place Thursday, April 29, and Friday, April 30.  This event, organized by the Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities (URSCA) Committee and Instructional Technology, included three virtual live sessions, a series of on-demand pre-recorded presentations, and an art gallery.  Chemistry students presented their research, either through STEC projects or class projects, in both the pre-recorded and live sessions.  We are very proud of all of the research students are doing in…

The Chemistry discipline welcomed six new members into the Gamma Sigma Epsilon Chemistry Honor Society at virtual induction ceremony held on April 23, 2021. The ceremony was hosted by GGC Chemistry faculty member Dr. Charmita Burch. On April 8, 2021, the GGC School of Science of Technology held its annual Science, Technology, and Research Symposium (STaRS). The purpose of this event is to promote science, math, and technology for our STEM students, and to provide opportunities to showcase the scientific research and other STEM activities that take place at GGC.  This year, the event was all virtual and included several student research posters, interactive activities, a graduate school fair, and a T-shirt design contest.  We are proud…

The GGC SACNAS chapter will be co-hosting a “Virtual Graduate School Prep Club (V-GSPC)”.  These events will start taking place at the start of May and will go into the summer. It’s a great opportunity for any of our students interested in learning about graduate school.  Students may also be paired with a graduate student mentor! With the move to virtual learning, other events that GGC SST and Chemistry are known for were forced to move online this semester as well.  One of these was the Super Saturday Series (S3).  S3 is a multi-day, hands-on workshops for middle school and high school students to learn more about technology and science. Congratulations to GGC student, Oliver Aniekwe, and his research advisor, Dr. Ajay Mallia!!!  Oliver has been selected for an American Chemical Society Colloid and Surface Chemistry Division National award. Congratulations to GGC Chemistry major Madison Preston who received the American Chemical Society’s 2020 Undergraduate Student Award in Environmental Chemistry! Madison conducted productive research under the supervision of Dr. Seungjin Lee, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, with outcomes influential in synthesis and application of hydrogels for nutrients recycling from human urine. This is the fourth consecutive year that a GGC student has won this prestigious national award.
