Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry is a subdiscipline of chemistry that studies the structure, properties, and reactions of carbon containing compounds.  Researchers at GGC are looking at organic applications in catalysis, pharmaceutical, and organometallics.

Dr. Ajay Mallia

Dr. Mallia’s research group investigates on the design and study of soft materials (gels, liquid crystals and polymers), pharmaceutically active molecules, green solvents/ionic liquids and in situ preparation and templating of metal nanoparticles.

Dr. Julia Paredes

Dr. Paredes is interested in Oxo-transfer catalysis to transform organic compounds and associated ligand synthesis. Additional research is underway using 3-D modeling of compounds using Augmented Reality and related technological advances assist student learning in the classroom.

Dr. Joseph Sloop

Dr. Sloop’s research program focuses on methods of preparation and selective fluorination of pharmocophore scaffolds and heterocycles. Students will have the opportunity to synthesize a wide variety of new compounds with potential pharmaceutical and industrial utility. Target molecule families include pyrazoles, isoxazoles, pyridines, pyrimidines, aniline derivatives as well as polycyclic molecules such as chalcones, coumarins, chromones, quinolines, isoquinolines, anthridines and anthroquinones.
