A native of North Carolina, Joseph C. Sloop received his B.S. with Special Attainments in Chemistry from Davidson College in 1983. In 1990 he obtained an M.S. in Chemistry from NCSU under the direction of Prof. Carl L. Bumgardner. After teaching at the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point and Drury College at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, he completed doctoral training in Chemistry at NCSU with Prof. David A. Shultz in 2003 and returned to West Point to teach organic chemistry. In 2009, Dr. Sloop joined the faculty at Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC), where he presently serves as Assistant Dean for the School of Science and Technology and Professor of Chemistry. He is the recipient of the USMA Junior Faculty Teaching Award (1993), the Phi Kappa Phi Scholastic Achievement Award (2008), co-recipient of the TAG Excalibur Award (2011) and Blackboard Catalyst Award (2012) and recipient of the GGC Award for Scholarship and Creative Activities (2012). He has published numerous SOTL and scientific journal articles, several book chapters and is the author of Succeeding in Organic Chemistry: A Systematic Problem-Solving Approach to Structure, Function and Mechanism (2010, Authorhouse). His research interests include organofluorine chemistry of heterocycles and ketone species as well as investigation of active learning methods to improve student performance in organic chemistry.
