Dr. Matthew Boggan joined Georgia Gwinnett College in 2016 from Mississippi State University where he coordinated graduate programs in educational leadership and an undergraduate program in special education. He has served in many educational roles over his career including bus driver, assistant teacher, special education teacher, assistant principal, principal and professor. His most memorable educational moment as a special education teacher included one of his students winning the Council for Exceptional Childrenās āYES I CANā Award for self-help skills at the 1997 annual conference in Salt Lake City. Memorable moments as a principal included initiating and chaperoning the first integrated senior class trip, working with faculty to create behavior programs for students with challenging behaviors, and successfully lobbying for a new building. From 2009ā2016, Boggan served as principal investigator/project director of a 2.94 million U.S. Department of Education Transition to Teaching grant which awarded 151 scholarships to students willing to teach in high-need school districts in Mississippi. 63 of those students were special education majors. In 2016, 96% of the 151 scholars are still teaching, and over 80% are still teaching in high-need school districts. Boggan credits this unusually high retention rate to effective mentoring efforts of grant faculty and staff.
