About Me

Dr. Mary Beth Anzovino joined the GGC faculty in fall 2016. She earned a B.A. in chemistry from Williams College and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. While at UW, she did research in the fields of synthetic organic methodology and chemistry education. Her doctoral research involved designing new general chemistry laboratory experiments and evaluating these experiments using a new survey she developed to assess students’ awareness of and attitudes toward scientific research. From Madison, she moved to Miami University, where she was a postdoctoral fellow (investigating organic chemistry students’ understanding of nucleophiles and electrophiles) and a visiting assistant professor (teaching general and organic chemistry courses).

Dr. Anzovino believes that teaching and learning should be a conversation among instructor and students, with information being shared in all directions, rather than a unidirectional transfer of knowledge from teacher to student. She incorporates active-learning techniques and computer simulations into her lessons to help her students engage more fully with chemistry.

Outside of chemistry and teaching, Dr. Anzovino enjoys playing ultimate frisbee, hiking, and knitting.
