Hello, Folks!  One of the concepts we briefly talked about in the CTE Gamification session was points-based grading, wherein students earn points for every assignment they complete in an additive fashion, like a game.  I’ve always used percentages and averages of categories.  Would someone who has used the additive points system chime in and let me know how it worked?  How did the students feel about it? What grade did you show them throughout the semester – a grade out of all possible points or a grade out of possible points to date?  I’m just wondering if it’s something I want to try.

I have been using a cumulative points system for years. I explain to students up front how and why I do this, and how to interpret their grade book.

Among other things, it makes much easier explaining what students can do/cannot do to earn a specific letter grade. And, towards the end of the semester, it allows students to understand and strategize for how much energy and attention they need to commit on assignments in order to land on the final letter grade they wish to earn.
