My service at GGC has ranged from work on course and program assessments in the Biology discipline, on STEM initiatives that support students and faculty in the School of Science and Technology, and at the College level, serving the office of the Associate Provost. I have served in leadership roles in several of these Biology, SST, and College committees.
IACUC; Institute on Animal Care and Use Committee
Member (2016 – 2018), Chair (2019-2021), College Committee
This committee is responsible for reviewing research and teaching proposals that utilize vertebrate animals. Ensuring the humane care and use of vertebrate animals in an academic setting is a Federal mandate for all U.S. institutions. We review and make recommendations on applications submitted by faculty.
STEM Student Success Committee
co-Chair (2019 – 2021), SST School Committee
As co-Chair of this Committee, I worked with multiple campus offices to investigate and craft proposals for programs that support student success. Campus offices that the Committee liaised with included Financial Aid, Career Development & Advising Center, School of Business, GGC’s Academic Internship program, Student Success & Engagement, and faculty and staff in the School of Science & Technology.
STEM-EIP/NSF Grant Leadership Team
(co-Investigator, 2016 – 2019), School-Wide
Grant work is centered on implementing several initiatives that support both faculty and students in SST including Peer Supplemental Instruction (PSI), Course-embedded Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs), Yale’s Mobile Summer Institutes (MoSIs), and SST’s Annual STEM Symposium.
STaRS; Science Technology and Research Show
Member (2015 – 16), co-Chair (2016 – 2017), SST School Committee
Work done on this committee supported the planning and execution of the STaRS event including, inviting graduate and professional schools, coordinating student poster competition, liaising with GGC departments (Facilities, Finance and Catering) to obtain resources for the event, and outreach to community businesses and science vendors for support of STaRS activities.
Biology Program Outcome Goals Assessment for the Cell Biology and Biotechnology Track
Chair (2014 – 2016), Biology Discipline Committee
This committee’s work evaluated the extent to which students in this track achieved course learning goals. Courses assessed under this track included Principles of Biology I and II, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Bioinformatics, and Biochemistry.
Assessment outcomes revealed the need to support student learning and served as the basis of the development of the Peer Supplemental Instruction (PSI) program, providing a collaborative learning environment for students to reinforce concepts learned in gateway courses.
Course coordinator of Principles of Biology I
(Fall 2016 – Spring 2018), Biology Discipline Committee
As co-coordinator for BIOL 1107K for 2 years, my work involved identifying and assessing learning outcomes of the course, coordinating weekly faculty meetings, setting lab schedules, managing weekly lab preparations and lab practicals, and liaising with textbook representatives.
